• RED FORT: Red fort is located in Old Delhi. It is a magnificent fort complex belonging to the 17th century. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan when he decided to shift his capital to Delhi from Agra. It consists of many sections or buildings like the Diwan-i-Aam (pavilion for the common public), Diwan-i-Khas (hall for special royal members and royal guests), Zenanas (quarters for women) etc. All the pavilions in the fort are connected by a continuous water channel from the river Yamuna, called the Nahr-i-Behisht( stream of paradise). Red fort has become a UNESCO world heritage site. It is still regarded as the focal point of Delhi and is site from where our Prime Minister addresses the nation on the 15th of August.
• Qutub Minar: Qutub Minar is located in Mehrauli in Delhi. Its construction was started by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first ruler of the slave dynasty and completed by Iltutmish, his successor. It is 72.5m high and is regarded as the world’s tallest standing minaret. Made of red sandstone with verses from the Holy Quran engraved on it, it is very famous for its Indo-Islamic style of architechture.
• Lotus Temple: Lotus Temple is a marvel of modern architecture and was designed by Mr. Fariborz Sahba. The temple has been given a shape of lotus with 27 free standing petal like structures made of marble. It is a temple of the Baha’i faith but all religions are welcome here. This temple is also regarded as the Mother Temple of the Indian subcontinent.
